Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For some students, each year in school is unfortunately a part of a continual struggle resulting in both frustration and resentment. This frustration and resentment creates yet another barrier to learning, and it is my job to turn it around. I am a teacher in a unique situation whereby my students are grouped homogeneously--meaning, by ability level. All of the students that I teach received a Level 1 or Level 2 on our state Reading Assessment. Almost all are reading significantly below grade level. They bear the labels "under-achieving" and "at risk". Almost half receive special education services. I simply label them as my students.
The "I'm Through, What Can I Do?" folders are a classroom management and remediation tool. Classroom management is an essential component to a successful classroom. Part of effective classroom management is understanding that all children work at different speeds. This program combats disruptive behaviors due to early finishers. Additionally, the folders serve as a remediation tool in that each one contains review material of previously taught lessons individualized to the particular student's needs.
It has been my experience that the best way to enrich the learning of my students is through structure and routine. We also use color-coding to help learn organization. Individualized and differentiated instruction is also vital to my students' learning. The funding of this grant will allow me to put together an "I'm Through, What Can I Do?" folder system in which each student in my two reading classes will receive an orange folder to keep at their desk. When a student finishes an assignment early, he/she can take out the orange folder and work quietly on the remediation work found inside. This provides for optimal use of all classroom time in addition to preventing potential behavior problems from students who become bored while waiting for other students to finish a task.
My students need you. They face obstacles to their learning every day. Although I have done my best to provide my students with every opportunity to succeed, funding for these types of projects is just not there in our community. In addition to struggling academically, most of my students live in poverty; over 95% of our students are on free/reduced lunch. Additionally, our district has been hard hit with budget cuts that have dramatically affected our ability to provide materials for our students. Your support will provide materials that will be utilized each and every day and will be a contributing factor to enriching the educational experience of students who greatly need it.
