Help me give my students a standing whiteboard and various arts and crafts supplies they need to run their own store while learning about Math and Financial Literacy.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at an amazing school where almost all of my inner city students are from low income backgrounds. They are a mixture of Hispanic and African American students. The student population is also comprised largely of English Language Learners and students with special needs. As teachers, we do everything in our power to make sure students have all of the necessary materials to be successful. Our students and parents are always grateful that we find ways to supply our students with learning tools to make their school year successful.
My Project
Project based learning has never been so alive in our 4th grade Math class! Every year, around Black Friday, students get super excited to run their very own store. Students get to create their own products and learn about financial literacy. This "small business" project is a project based learning activity that incorporates financial literacy, money counting, persuasive media, and writing. Students will work with a group to create a store. They will create a name, advertisement, products, and signs. Students will have a budget in play money. They will take it as a "loan" from the bank and use it to buy materials. They will research and come up with what they want to make and sell to other classes. The will learn about profit and loss. If their products don't sell, students will adjust prices and learn about supply and demand. At the end of this project, they will pay back their loan and split the profit.
This project based learning activity brings out so much joy in kids that love learning about financial literacy.
They also learn about working together to run a small business. There will be lots of adding, subtracting and working with decimals. We would like for our donors to help us purchase the crafts needed to make the products. We need paper, craft sticks, posters, markers, foam paper, felt paper, glue, white board to present our final project, and so many more crafty items that will help spark our imagination!
