I'm On the Cover

My students need books that represent their culture, their experiences, their faces: books that they can identify with.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Bielecki's classroom raised $325

This project is fully funded

My school is filled with fifth and sixth grade students with diverse backgrounds and diverse needs. My role within this building is to share ideas and resources with teachers and students in every classroom and I believe that equipping our phenomenal groups of learners with books that they can relate to will empower them to dig into literature with heightened interest, resulting in greater success when it comes to literacy!

With the help of Donors Choose and a community grant that we have already received, our teachers intend to empower our students by connecting them to literature. We want to empower students by providing literature that features THEM as characters. We continue to teach students to make connections to the text that they are reading, but if our diverse classrooms of students don’t have stories that reflect the cultures that are represented in our schools, then there is less for them to connect with. Our goal with this project is to provide texts that feature characters that look like our students on the book cover and to increase students’ enthusiasm for reading. “I’m on the Cover” will give our culturally diverse student body new books that will invite them to read.

By increasing our book collection, I believe that we have the power to build community within our school and around our school district. The books that we are asking for will assist us in doing this. With these books our students will be able to connect to one another as well as to others in their community through the mentoring program.

By contributing to this project, you will be elevating understanding and appreciation for students in our community. With this collection of books, 470 students will be provided an opportunity to experience new cultures, new countries and new friends through their relationship with the characters! As we begin our mentoring program at the K-4 buildings there will be additional students that will benefit from “I’m On the Cover”. Please help us build community in our schools and spread a new understanding and appreciation to benefit the entire community! Thank you.
