Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school has an enrollment of 1,100 students, Pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade. Developing strong analytical thinkers, researchers and readers through interactive communication is the foundation of teaching. Despite the violence that occurs in and around the Chicago area, my students come to school convinced they can make a difference in the communities they represent. My students inspire me to be a better teacher.
To continue to drive our learning, my students require engaging technological resources that will challenge and sustain their learning.
Approximately 10% of the student population receives special education services. Ninety-four percent are considered low-income and receive free or reduced meals at school throughout the day. Student population is 84% Hispanic and 16% African American. Twenty-three percent of our school population is considered Limited English Proficient.
My Project
Alexa has the capability of creating a habit of reading for information and enjoyment. It is important that students develop technological skills as well as gain knowledge that will help them become informed decision makers and make connections to the real world. In Social Studies, students practice asking geography and civic questioning skills by thinking of and discussing the questions they want Alexa to answer. Students have to learn how to enunciate, use appropriate fluency, and formal language to receive a response from Alexa. We're using Alexa and speakers to keep up with daily events around the world and in areas we are studying. All of our information from Alexa will be written in our journals for later discussions.
