We are a blessed group of students. Our children are all between the ages of 3 and 4 years old. They have all been diagnosed with different disabilities. All of them have goals related to fine motor and social skills. They have trouble using their hands to grip items such as cars, small building blocks, and crayons. The majority of our students are autistic, downs, and are medically fragile; and they require a lot of different activities. Most of them live in low-income apartment households.
With our children having a large range of disabilities, hands-on learning is very important.
Many of our students are non-verbal and have limited mobility. They get really excited when they can work to accomplish a learning task. Since all of our students are working virtually we are in need of getting items to help them with different ways of reaching math counting goals. When our students return face to face we will have to have extra manipulative items so that we can provide them with their own set. Our students with their parents have done a wonderful job of staying focused and working with what little they have to help reach their goals.
My Project
Since our student's are totally virtual, we are limited on materials that we can give them to use. The counting and sorting bear sets will give them access to working on these goals. The peg board set will help with their fine motor skills of stacking and pushing items together with a small amount of strength.
Our children are working really hard to accomplish their goals.
They are sorting by colors and less than and great than. We also have several of our children that have fine motor skills that need to be accomplished. Counting by1's, 5's and 10's are our goal after the holidays for our more advanced student.
With the items that we have chosen, this will really be a big help for our kids. We will be able to give them material that they can use at home. Our parent's have been so helpful working with their children to accomplish the virtual lessons. Any items that we can provide for their educational needs is a big plus.
