Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the high school librarian of a large urban 9-12 secondary school in California. One of my educational objectives is to encourage my students to discover the joy of reading.

Therefore, I need to constantly purchase relevant, compelling, and current books for the entire student body.

Criteria I keep in mind when determining what books to buy are my students' various topics/authors of interest, their diverse levels of academic mastery, and the contemporary issues in our modern culture.

My overall desire is to bolster literacy skills while at the same time to inspire our youth to find pleasure in reading.

My Project

Like it or not, it's the dismal truth: Many students in high school are at-risk readers who still can't really read. Or they despise reading so much that if teachers are going to expect them to read on their own, super easy books must be recommended that won't tax these students' intellectual capacity and stamina.

Therefore, I compiled a list of books whose themes and plots extend through the adolescent years, but whose reading level are considerably lower than high school.

Remember Beverly Clearly? Judy Blume? Louis Sachar? These are some of the authors I included on the list.

After all, enchanting storytelling + easy to read text = a successful reading experience for at risk-readers!!!
