I am a science resource teacher in a public school in Winston-Salem, N.C. I see all the school's students and teach them science enrichment. My second graders are getting ready to study the states of matter and how matter changes.
This is an exciting way for them to have fun, get interested in simple chemistry and at the same time learn the basic principles of solids, liquids, gases, chemical changes, physical changes, solutions and mixtures.
There is a kit call the "Fizz Wizard and Jammin' Jelly Reaction Kit". It is a set of chemistry experiments that are edible. They make solutions, mixtures, learn about pH and acid base reactions. There are color changes, tasty gels, polymer pudding and foaming color-changing jelly things.
I have 86 second graders. The children will be working in pairs and therefore I will need 43 reaction kits. At this age children are ready and eager to love science. All too often science classes are writing vocabulary words, discussing with the children what they think might happen if we mix A and B, and watching a video. This is a chance for the children to get excited, laugh, pretend to be real scientists and, best of all in their eyes, EAT! These experiences are what they will remember for a lifetime when all of those boring vocabulary words are lost in the twilight zone.
