I'm Drinking Water from the Time of the Dinosaurs?
My students need a Water Cycle Kit, Water Cycle Model, Aneroid Barometer, Wind Vane, and Instant Snow so they can see and feel (hands on) how weather really works.
Weather is experienced by children every day in what they wear. However, understanding the water cycle with big words like evaporation, condensation, and precipitation can be puzzling. Having weather instruments and materials to use will help solve the mystery of weather with our fourth graders.
Our students attend a public school in Utah.
They live in a low to middle income area. The students are excited to learn about the world around them. They work hard, but many have challenges in learning. There is a great diversity of students with 31 in the classroom. There is a good feeling of family and community support.
My Project
Weather and the water cycle will become exciting and hands on subjects for the students instead of dry textbook readings with the requested resources. The Water Cycle Activity Set has a model where the students will actually be able to see the water cycle in action. The lesson plans and resources included with the model will help me to excite the children about the fact that we are using the same water the dinosaurs used. They will understand the need to conserve fresh water. The Accent Water Cycle Kit will let the children replicate the water cycle they saw in the model with their own hands on materials. They will see and feel the process of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. The Aneroid Barometer will show the children how the barometric pressure affects our weather. Using the Wind Vane, students will be able to tell the direction and influence of the wind on our weather. The Instant-Snow Bag will add that excitement and awe which will make their study of weather fun!
Seeing students' eyes light up with understanding of the water cycle and weather around them is the goal of this project.
Being able to touch and manipulate the weather instruments will turn the lights on in my students' eyes. I will be able to teach weather to all three fourth grade classes with these resources this year and in the years to come. Students will learn to conserve our freshwater resources. Teaching students about weather and the water cycle will have a long lasting life benefit.
