Help me give my students an incentive to read more. I was gifted a bag of Classic Beanie Babies and I give them out to students when they increase their words per minute score. Beanie Baby incentive works!

My Project
This summer I visited a garage sale in my hometown of Vernonia, OR. I knew the woman who was having the sale as she had been the head cook at the elementary school that I was now teaching 3rd grade. While we visited, she offered me two bags of Classic Beanie Babies (at no cost) that belong to her now adult daughter. She explained that her daughter had Mrs. Grady as a remedial reading teacher in elementary and that she would earn a Beanie Baby when she increased her reading speed and accuracy. She encouraged me to take the Beanie Babies to offer to my students as an incentive to increase their reading scores.
Uncertain about Beanie Babies motivating students to increase reading scores, I took the two bags of Beanie Babies to school.
Needless to say, the response has been off the charts! One student in particular has done a 180 degree turn in her eagerness and willingness to read. I'm simply amazed how this incentive has worked!
Mrs. Grady passed away about 10 years ago. I remember hearing stories of the dozens of Beanie Babies that were in her home after her passing. Even at that time, I couldn't understand how a Beanie Baby could motivate a student to read.
Today, I'm sold out to Mrs. Grady's strategy! As a teacher, all I simply want to do is help my students learn how to read and develop a passion for reading. Now I know, and I am honored to continue Mrs. Grady's tradition!
