My Students

Science should be all about hands-on learning and engaging demonstrations. After recently inheriting a SmartBoard, my classroom needs a projector to make the SmartBoard functional. Using this technology daily will help bring science to life for my students and keep them on the path to college.

My students are wonderful 8th graders in an urban middle school in New York.

It is a high poverty, low income neighborhood and most of my students have few chances to experience science outside of the classroom. They are eager to learn, but my decades-old overhead projector just doesn't do justice to their curiosity, or to all the marvels science has to offer. After having an LCD projector briefly last year, and being able to utilize it and a SmartBoard, the difference in my students' attention and engagement in science was amazing. I'd love to be able to have my own projector so I could foster that excitement towards science all year, every year.

My Project

I am asking for an LCD projector. This would allow me to change every aspect of how I currently present my lessons. Students would walk in and be greeted with a PowerPoint "Starter" activity instead of one written on overheads or my whiteboard. PowerPoint notes could be created to illustrate the principles of life and earth sciences in visual and audio formats - allowing me to reach more students with the science content. Preparing for tests could be made more engaging with online "Jeopardy" games. Finally, this technology would allow students to step into a 21st century science classroom and prepare to compete with other students for spots in the top high schools and colleges around the country. I'd like my students to see what science and technology has to offer, and the best way to do that is to utilize technology in our everyday lessons, reviews, and labs.

Having a projector will impact my students immensely.

Not only will it engage them in science, but it will help show them a side of science that textbooks and worksheets can't access. Being able to take a virtual tour of a plant and animal cell will SHOW my students the similarities and differences in a way that a Venn diagram and colored pictures simply cannot. Having access to interactive lessons will bring my students into a 21st century classroom experience, something they really deserve.
