This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are imaginative and fun-loving kids ages 3-5 with autism and many with intellectual disabilities as well. We come from low-income households and have not had much experience with the world outside their small community.

Many of my students don't have the ability to learn online.

Many depend on hands on activities or toys and whatever books they have at home. Despite the hardships they are facing with school being closed, they are happy and still wanting to learn.

My Project

I want to have a classroom that cultivate children’s empathy and foster ways to deal with racial identity. Having a dollhouse and multicultural dolls will allow for doll play, engaging children’s empathy and problem-solving skills while building their self esteem and understanding of others. My students often need help picking up on social cues or help with how to behave in certain situations. We work hard to provide social-emotional learning on a daily basis.

If we want children to thrive in a diverse world and choose to stand up for themselves and others, then we must choose to help young children make sense out of the confusing and often emotionally charged messages they receive about themselves and others. Having all these books, the dollhouse and dolls will give me the opportunity to help build a positive foundation with my beautiful students. This will be done in both a remote learning setting and an in-person setting once it is safe to return to the classroom.
