My students need an iPad to enhance our learning experiences with technology.

My Students
Technology is changing daily! Unfortunately, this is not true in our classroom. Our school is in a neighborhood where families struggle to provide food, shelter, and clothing for their children. We need modern technology, but have no money for it!
My students are third graders in a high poverty neighborhood.
My students have very few life experiences, due to economic hardship. They are struggling to find a balance between the gang activity they see daily in the streets and where they fit in life. When at school, the students are provided with two hot meals a day. They feel safe and loved and know what to expect. Many of my students entered school without the skills needed to be successful. They are now in third grade and are struggling to catch up with the other students that have all their needs met. If my students don't make drastic improvements, they will always be behind. What kind of a future is that?
My Project
The iPad is the perfect, first computer experience for young children. Children love to use technology and anything that draws their attention to learning in a positive light is a fantastic resource! There are thousands of apps available to help students practice English, phonics, writing, math, etc. The iPad allows the students to practice at their own ability level. Students, who are below grade level, at grade level, or above grade level, can all benefit from the apps. I plan to use the iPads at an independent center to practice skills needed for success in third grade. Another way I would like to use the iPad is as a listening center with a small group of children using an app for an interactive book. The bright colorful display, ease of use, and huge storehouse of apps available, make the iPad an incredible classroom tool.
There are so many expectations for what our third graders must know in able to move on and be successful.
When students enter third grade unable to read, they are already so far behind. Using iPads in the classroom would make learning fun and exciting for my students. We need every opportunity to catch up with the 21st century. Anything that motivates children to want to learn more is an invaluable asset!
