My Students
My students have been directly affected by Covid-19 due to school being closed indefinitely. Through virtual teaching, students are able to access the learning curriculum at home. However, many of my students do not have access to technology at home. They are limited to the use of their parent's cell phones or no access at all. I teach at a Title I school in Missouri where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students come from households where parents are working two or three jobs just to maintain.
Even though the schools are closed the learning must continue.
Despite financial obstacles during the pandemic students are trying their best to keep up with the demands of distance learning. However, they have limited resources. It amazes me the strength and optimism they have at just the tender age of 7 years old. They truly have the weight of the world on their shoulders. During school closure, we are still trying to inspire young minds to grow. They are building ambassadors, world travelers, scientists, entrepreneurs, teachers... They are our future and I want to make sure they have the materials they need for distance learning.
My Project
Technology is all around us and constantly evolving. If used correctly, mobile devices and the applications they support will help prepare students for their future careers. It only makes sense to prepare our youth with the tools they are going to need to be successful lawyers, politicians, teachers, doctors, construction workers, etc. Integrating technology into distance learning is an effective way to connect with students. It gives students the opportunity to enhance their interaction with their classmates and instructors by encouraging collaboration.
Teachers are doing their best to put out accessible content, but students can't access this content because of limited resources.
Distance learning has been a massive adjustment for all students. For students with extraordinary needs, the change has been even more challenging if they do not have the resources at home that will allow them to access the content. If we can put an iPad in the hands of each student, they could listen to the texts being read aloud for them, watch the instructional videos, and open the google documents and forms that contain their work.
While all teachers are working hard to put out content that is accessible to all learners, some students simply cannot access this content because they do not have the technology at home. Over the last 4 weeks of distance learning, I haven't seen some of my students even once because they have no device with which to get online and participate in the learning. With an iPad, these students can finally be included in the distance learning rather than falling still farther behind. Without an iPad, these students will remain disconnected from learning and will finish out the year with incomplete studies and a distinct feeling of neglect.
