This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am reaching out to you with a heartfelt request to support my initiative aimed at fostering a love for reading among minority boys aged 13-15 in my inner-city school.

It is disheartening to note that a significant number of boys of color in our Title 1 school are grappling with reading challenges, and struggling to meet grade-level expectations.

The scarcity of high-interest books further exacerbates this issue, hindering their ability to engage with literature that resonates with their experiences and aspirations.

Your generous contribution can make a profound impact by providing these young minds with access to books that not only match their reading levels but also capture their imaginations. I aim to introduce a diverse range of classroom books that reflect the experiences of my students, helping them connect with literature on a personal level. Some popular choices among this age group include "The Crossover", "Ghost", and “Demon Slayer”, which address themes relevant to the challenges and triumphs faced by young men. Additionally, I am looking to expand my collection to include genres such as adventure, sports, and science fiction, as these have proven to be particularly appealing to boys in this age range. With respect to the classics, I have included graphic novels and reimagined texts of Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, and the Odyssey. And finally, what better way to get these boys excited than by gifting them Hot Cheetos?
