Igniting a Reading Passion in Our Deaf/Hard of Hearing Students

Help me give my students inspiration to develop a passion for reading by providing graphic novels with diverse characters and stories by underrepresented authors, fostering an inclusive and engaging learning experience.

My Project

I love how my Deaf and Hard of Hearing students approach learning with creativity, curiosity, and resilience. Each student brings a unique perspective to the classroom, and their eagerness to explore new ideas and overcome challenges is inspiring. They thrive in an environment that recognizes their individual experiences, learning styles, and strengths. They are not just students; they are vibrant individuals full of potential, and it’s a privilege to support their growth.

The graphic novels I am requesting will be invaluable resources to help them learn.

These books combine text and visuals, making them a perfect fit for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students who rely on visual cues to enhance comprehension. The detailed illustrations and engaging storylines will allow my students to connect deeply with the material, making it easier for them to grasp complex concepts. The diverse characters and themes in these graphic novels, such as identity, resilience, and community, reflect my students’ interests and experiences, which will inspire them to engage with the books in a meaningful way. Representation in literature is crucial, as it helps my students feel seen and valued, which boosts their confidence and motivation to read.

These graphic novels will also provide a space for my students to explore important social-emotional themes like perseverance, self-discovery, and empathy. By connecting with these characters, my students will learn to relate to the stories on a personal level, which promotes both literacy skills and emotional growth. With these resources, I hope to foster a love of reading, enhance their critical thinking abilities, and create an inclusive learning environment where they feel empowered and supported as they grow into confident readers and thinkers.
