My Project
I teach 6th grade ELA in a small town outside of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Many of my students come from socioeconomically challenged families, and most of them receive free and reduced lunch. Some of my students live in homes where their literacy is encouraged and enriched, but the majority of them do not receive this support at home.
I plan to use these books for a read aloud unit at the beginning of the school year to spark my students' interest in grade-level fiction texts.
One of the major problems we've faced at our school is motivating students to read. However, I've noticed that many of my students enjoy Alan Gratz's other books (Ground Zero, Refugee, etc.) so I am confident that this book will capture their interest.
Promoting a school culture that prioritizes reading is one of the most important ways teachers can develop students' literacy. Your donation would help me make a major step in the right direction!
