My Students
At our school, we foster a community of students with strong character and high self-esteem who display critical thinking skills that will enable them to become life-long learners. Our staff members and parents work together to educate more than 400 children in grades preK-6th. Our school is a Title I-funded school with 100% of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
Every student deserves to have a personal library of their own and more than half of my students don't own or have books at home.
My class consists of 30 curious, passionate, vivacious, students who love to read. Through their hard work and dedication, they have been selected to partake in an intensive reading program. This program is rigorous, fast-paced, and fosters a community of learners who model excellence, integrity, and ever-evolving skills for the 21st century. Though students have this opportunity, many of them are lacking the necessary resources to continue working at home. Having the supplies needed will boost their confidence and allow them to be the bright shining academics leaders they have proven to be.
My Project
These books were chosen based on student interests and the desire to offer a personal library at their homes.
In order to foster a love for reading, my students need access to books both inside and outside of the classroom.
Having books available to them at home is imperative. The selected books will be featured in our class library and available for students to check out and take home. A reading survey conducted by my students informed me that many of my students have difficulty finding novels at home therefore they can't read while at home. Many students confirmed that having books to read at home would generate interest and encourage them to read more.
The best way to promote reading and instill a love for reading is to make sure students have books readily available to them. Students need to read daily and should also be allowed to read what interests them. These books will help my students strengthen their reading skills.
