Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, our scholars have had many different school experiences over the last three years: fully in-person learning, hybrid learning, fully virtual learning, or some combination of all three. They have met challenges with resilience, flexibility, and grace, but part of what this means is that there are many different reading levels present in my classroom. Some scholars are just beginning to unlock the keys to fluent reading, while others are devouring lengthy chapter books. When so many different reading levels are present, it is critically important that the classroom library reflects each of those reading levels.
My students love graphic novels, books with elements of science, and beginning chapter books that include characters that look like them.
In a diverse classroom, diverse book choices including characters of all cultures, races, and abilities help every scholar feel included.
These two series are the perfect choices to meet many of those needs and interests! The Science Comics graphic novels have an approachable format for my less confident readers but are equally enjoyable for fluent readers. They cover a variety of content areas, genres, and interests, and include characters from a variety of cultures, races, and ability levels. Similarly, the Ada Twist beginning chapter books feature characters that are representative of the students in my class and teach science and engineering concepts in an approachable way. I know my scholars will be most interested in titles such as 'Spiders: Worldwide Webs' and 'Ada Twist and the Disappearing Dogs.' There are also titles that will prepare them with some content knowledge for subjects learned in later grades, such as electronics, life cycles, habitats, and more.
