Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Every school year is equally important, but Third grade is a very critical year for literacy instruction and development. Third graders and their teachers are tasked with shifting from an instructional focus of “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” The shift requires new skills and materials. Instead of a focus on decoding words, phrases, and fluency, students are engaged in building a “ toolbox” of new reading comprehension skills. The reading material needed for this task explores diverse texts, topics, and genres.

Time For Kids Magazine will be an invaluable resource for my students as they build the comprehension skills they will need to “ read to learn” this year, as opposed to solely “ learning to read.” Time Magazine’s engaging format and interesting content will help my students develop comprehension skills and a lifelong appreciation for books and learning.

Time For Kids publication provides age-appropriate content, encourages critical thinking, and fosters a love of reading. Time for Kids aligns with Florida B.E.S.T standards and will enrich lessons. The magazine's articles are designed to help students analyze text, understand key points, and draw conclusions, thus improving their reading comprehension skills, especially with nonfiction texts.

Having both a print version to hold and annotate and a digital component that offers content in Spanish, audio versions, and multiple Lexile levels will further support students by helping meet the diverse learning needs in my classroom.

Time for Kids will introduce my students to current events in an engaging and age-appropriate way, helping them understand the world around, bringing reading and content instruction to life. Through diverse topics and different viewpoints, Time for Kids will encourage my students to think more critically about what they read, encouraging them to become informed and active citizens.
