Help me give my students a book to spark their love of reading! It would be so amazing for my students to start the school year with their own copies of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My lively 6th grade students this year are barrels of fun! They love to read, they are enthusiastic about math, they enjoy discussing new ideas with each other, and most importantly: (even in middle school) they are excited about learning!
Our small K-8 school has one class per grade, with special education students integrated into the middle school grades through "flexible programming." We are a tight-knit bunch, since most of my students have been together since kindergarten.
Although our school is located in a small corner of the Bronx, and remote learning has been quite a challenge, we are trying out best to connect through the internet and reinforce personal connections!
My Project
Every year we start Middle School by reading Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. Not only is Rick Riordan a talented and prolific writer, but he is beloved by all of my students and they cannot get enough of his books! By teaching students about Greek mythology, they learn about language, symbols, friendship, empathy, and persistence.
Percy Jackson teaches my students that someone who is not all that successful at first, can still be a hero and save the world!
We've read these books so many times that our copies are torn and tattered, and unfit to keep loving and reading so much. I would love for my students who have endured so much these past few months to have new books to take home and read during blended or remote learning as we navigate a brand new school year. Considering all of the screen time that they've had, it would be amazing for them to be able to read their own copy of a book they will learn to love just as much as my past classes have.
We will read these books as a class -- sometimes out loud, other times independently-- we will discuss important events, the myths and symbolism woven into this adventure, and learn from Percy and his friends about the heroic characteristics that can help us all save the day!
