Our students struggle daily while trying to read our social studies and science textbooks. Our third graders face many challenges in our high-poverty, 99% minority elementary school. We have a fresh group of teachers in our grade this year, ready to change the traditional way these kids are learning. Research shows that reading in all subjects, especially social studies and science, can make reading fun and meaningful for our struggling readers. We want to enhance our students' curriculum and motivate them to read topics of interest. Many of our students do not leave their neighborhood subsidized housing for outside world experiences. Exposure to this high-quality magazine will provide students with an exciting "trip around the world", when the magazines arrive each week. We need financial support to provide a magazine for each of our high-poverty students, who are just bursting with potential!
The parents of our students care about their student's learning, but they cannot afford the cost of a magazine subscription. Our school is a high-poverty school, with 99% minority and 98% free and reduced lunch status. Our students' social studies and science textbooks are too difficult, given that many of our third graders are two or more grade levels behind. The motivation to read is low, due to a lack of engaging supplemental resources in the content areas.
We need to change how these kids view learning! It should be fun, not hard! The students at our school are far below where they need to be academically, especially in reading. Our students also lack exposure to a wide variety of real-world experiences. State standardized tests reference situations such as "things at the beach". Most of our students have never been to the beach, so these references are meaningless. "Time for Kids" magazine provides exposure to many real-world experiences. Our students can read the magazine text more fluently and see current events pictures to take them on "trips around the world"!
You will help our high-poverty third graders leave their seats and read their way into a whole new world of learning! These students deserve magazines, that they can take home after we teach from them, since most do not own books at their home. Help make reading in science and social studies an EXCITING ADVENTURE!
