My Students
My students are urban students who desperately want to learn to read independently. I was shocked to learn that a common answer to "What is your favorite book?" is "I don't have any books at home." Additionally, my students responded to the question "Who reads to you at home?" with answers like "nobody" or "my brother" or "my sister." My children are from families with multiple children who are very close in age to each other who attempt to parent their younger siblings. Many of the siblings are limited in their reading abilities due to lack of support at home. Therefore, the cycle of illiteracy continues from one generation to another.
Research shows that the amount of time that a child spends handling sight word books at an early age improves their reading achievement.
Providing students with simple books that contain sight words that build on the previous books words allow them to read independently at home after they practice these books with me in class.
The gift of reading is priceless. Reading books allows you to escape your reality even if just for a few minutes. Please help me in breaking the generational illiteracy that cripples my students.
My Project
We will practice reading these books containing sight words in small groups so that our students feel confident reading them alone over and over again before they take them home. Kindergartners are required to learn the first 50 sight words in order to be reading at the state required level by the end of the school year.
The ability to call these books their own promotes a sense of control in a home where they control very little of what they see and hear.
Please help me show my students that there is a world that they can be a part of by reading for information and enjoyment. Your gift will provide temporary relief from the trauma associated with living in poverty. It will motivate them to master skills that will help them help themselves. As readers, they can help break the generational cycle by reading to younger siblings, cousins, and friends.
