My Students
I teach English Language Development and Newcomer English Language Arts (mixed grades) to very diverse groups of students. I also teach 6th grade general education classes, English Language Arts and Social Studies. My 6th-8th graders are intelligent and inquisitive students. Some of these students were born in this country, while others have only been here for a short time.
The Newcomers are recently emigrated from over ten different countries including: Palestine, Honduras, Brazil, El Salvador, Philippines, China, and Thailand.
These students are highly motivated to learn English to fit in and survive in their remarkable new environment. Students represent different parts of the world all coming together in one place with the same main goals: to increase their knowledge and become proficient in English.
The sixth grade students are attending school at an exciting time with new changes in curriculum. We are incorporating technology into each class meeting. These students are learning Language Arts and Social Studies in fresh and exciting ways while developing 21st Century skills.
My Project
My students are at various stages of reading levels. They are required to read. Some students get wiggly during reading time or just do not like sitting in an uncomfortable desk chair. The Zebra chair will allow students some seating choice during silent reading.
These books like Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter and Dead Guy Spy were actually selected by my students as materials they would love to have added to our class library.
The books they chose for our class library will provide opportunities for many students to read new (to them), exciting books. It is always a wonderful gift to introduce students to books that grab their interest and make reading a fun experience.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
