Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The goal of this project is to assist special needs students (ages 3-5), especially students with Autism, in their social communication & interactions via play. Our curriculum is play-based which means students acquire language and social skills via play and hands-on experiences with both adults and peers. I want them to come into their classroom each day ready to learn and ready to have fun with all the toys and materials in their classroom! All these items are going to pair well with the classroom setting I've already created which aims to have all preschool learners to feel safe and cared for.
My students are special because they teach me how to become a better teacher and a better advocate for them.
Their needs are my main priority and these items will definitely help me meet some of their needs.
I would love to create a Calming Corner for my students where they can self-regulate when they feel emotionally overwhelmed. It'll be a designated space with a beanbag and canopy where students can rest, look at a book, or be alone with a preferred toy. With these soft blocks and magna tiles my students will be working on sharing, turn-taking, and positive social interactions with familiar adults and peers. I always make play-dough for my students so the kit will be used for that. Playing with play-dough is a fun & calming way for them to practice their fine motor skills. Preschoolers love to paint! We have future Claude Monet's and Leonardo Da Vinci's ready to paint so painting aprons would be greatly appreciated to avoid messy clothes! Lastly, a big flannel board where students and I can place felt puppets during story time would make story time and literacy activities much more interactive and engaging for everyone.
