it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
There's a surge of energy that bustles around the room when the Smartboard is fired up, the one piece of working technology we have. The idea of technology in the classroom is one that excites my students and lightens learning, but unfortunately we have very little resources for students to use. It is my goal to transform my students into fabulous readers, writers, and mathematicians, and having more technology in the classroom could really make a difference.
My classroom is comprised of 17 students who come from low-income families and could use for more resources within the classroom.
Our school serves student in grades K-5 in the inner city; all of which are entitled to free lunch. Many of my students have come in with no prior education and are already below the standard that we expect them to be at; starting at such a disadvantage will only increase the gap that is keeping them from success. Inner city schools struggle to gain resources that other districts may have, inhibiting students from reaching their full potential. I want my students to be successful in life, so I want to give them opportunities to ensure they are engaged and excited learners.
My Project
In a world filled with technology it begins to feel like a disadvantage to be so disconnected in the classroom, especially to a group of 5-year-olds in Kindergarten that have lived their entire lives enveloped in technology's bright and colorful ways. My students will benefit from having tablets in the classroom so that they can each utilize different programs on their own that would be more adapted to their individual learning. In the classroom a large part of our day is spent in small groups working on various grade level skills, it would be beneficial to have the tablets so that students could spend more of their center time engaging in specific programs that adhere to their level of learning. Students are so unique and need various methods of teaching to learn, and by not having much technology for them to use it is doing their learning process a disservice.
Sharing the limited resources we have does not allow students to explore the various programs we use, and that loss of exploration is devastating to their overall educational development.
With programs like Starfall, ABCMouse, and Lexia students can learn so much with the help of technology, but only having two working desktop computers does not allow each child to be fully encapsulated in the programs at hand. Kindergarten is a huge transition for so many students so providing some stability while still increasing learning is a goal that needs to be adhered to and could happen with the help of some more technology, which is virtually nonexistent at the moment.
