Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Walk into my classroom, and you will see reading happening. A majority of my morning is spent doing various activities to help my students read. It could be teaching and reviewing sight words with my beginner readers to monitoring and "checking in" with my more fluent readers.

I teach first grade in a large, urban school district.

My school is a Title 1 school. My students come from a variety of ethnic and low socio-economic backgrounds. We have a high ELL population. Last year, unfortunately, our school was labeled as a "failing school" due to low state test scores. Despite the challenges our students face, our students, parents, and staff work together to give them the best possible education they deserve.

My Project

Children of all ages love to be read to, therefore, I am asking for books on CD for my listening center. The listening center will be used to help students understand how exciting books are when you put letters together to make words and words together to make stories. I want them to appreciate good literature and how, with practice, they can read and share their favorite books.

As a way of settling my students down after coming in from recess, I have my students join me and sit in my carpet area.

It is during this time that I read aloud to them. Year after year, my students have told me that this is their favorite time of the day. The books on CD will be used in a listening center to help beginning readers gain confidence and more advanced readers with fluency.
