My students need vocabulary aids such as vocabulary cards, grammar help from books such as No More Overused Words and Idiom of the Week. 24 subscriptions to Scholastic Magazines will provide interesting reading material.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Each day in my classroom, we learn a new 4th grade word to replace an overused 1st grade word. My students are learning English, so most of their words are first grade words. I want to get them to have a grade appropriate vocabulary to incorporate in their two compositions for the year end test.
My students are ELL students who are transitioning from Spanish to English.
Our school is in an urban area where Spanish is spoken probably 95% of the time. The only opportunity that my students have to learn English is at school. It would be my wish that they learn English before 4th grade, but that is not the case. Even so, they are still expected to be able to write two compositions at an accomplished level on the end of the year state test.
I know that my students are not on grade level, but they don't have to stay there. What I want to do is to help them bridge the gap, but they have to conquer the English first. Learning has to be fun for them. I've already found out the average 4th grade bilingual student is hesitant to learn English. If it's enjoyable, they don't think of it as learning but just having fun playing a game. So it is my job to make learning English fun.
My Project
My students need vocabulary aids such as vocabulary cards, grammar help from books such as No More Overused Words and Idiom of the Week. 24 subscriptions to Scholastic Magazines will provide interesting reading material. I plan to use the vocabulary cards and the synonym cards to teach new words to increase their vocabulary. I can teach figurative language with the Idiom of the Week. This will have an impact on their compositions because it will help them to write on grade level.
I can introduce the different parts of speech by using the grammar books which will provide examples as well. The interactive grammar game will allow for the students to practice using the grammar while having fun doing so.
The Scholastic Magazines will provide interesting reading material and also keep them up to date on current events. Each of these items can be used to teach whole group, or the students can use them independently in centers. Either way, the students will be learning and improving their English. They are more than capable of learning, but it won't be easy. The more fun it is, the quicker they will learn and the more successful they will be.
Most would say we live in the best country in the world.
We should do everything we can to make every student successful. For my students, that means helping them learn to read, speak, and write English. Not only will this help them with their state test, but for the remainder of their school years. Fourth grade is only the beginning for them, and I want them to be eager to learn more so that they can reach their potential. They can do this, but only with the help of generous donors who care.
