Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend middle school in Norwalk, Connecticut, with over 75% of the school receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Norwalk is an urban area where many of my students live below the poverty level and cannot afford even the basic supplies. My students have a higher need for social-emotional tools to help aid them in coping with school stresses and to become successful in their classes. Our students are creative, innovative, and true consumers of knowledge. As a Gifted and Talented teacher, I work closely with social studies and science teachers and am able to infuse this curriculum with topics of diversity, justice, and action. My students are excited about learning and thrive when given the right tools to succeed.

My Project

Students in my gifted and talented classroom attend a newly formed STEM school. They are empowered to create solutions to problems or struggles found within their schools or communities. Passion-projects and competition projects with leading themes of diversity, justice, and action propel students to look into the needs around them and use research to design and create community service projects. A limiting factor is not the passions or ideas, but the availability of materials.

When creating my recent project, I was truly inspired by two winning projects in the If/Then Contest.

“3D Printer Needed for Community Service Project,” and “If We Build Up Girls, Then We All Become STEMinists,” These projects gave insight to put the right tools and materials in the hands of the students and to sprinkle in inspiration of strong female role models. Students imagine and design items that can make a difference by using inspiring leaders as a guiding force. Ms Boyd’s comments on community service and “embracing that we are better together,” ring true in the lessons and values I am trying to instill in my students. Ms. Trohez stated, “So I want to use what they love to build my girls’ confidence in doing science, while helping them learn about successful and inspiring women in their STEM fields.”, emphasizes that providing proper tools and materials builds the confidence needed to follow-through on the class’ project ideas becoming solutions. Resources in the If/Then collection like 3-d printing videos like Mission Unstoppable prosthetic limbs and statues to inspiration the passion project creations. My project includes cardboard sheets, styrofoam, and hot glue guns to create prototype models. Cameras, light-box, and microphones are to help create realistic podcasts, photo collages, and more on their community service projects. Students should feel the courage that if they dream it, they can build it!
