My 5th grade students are very diverse. We come from a variety of social, economic, religious, and racial backgrounds. We speak several different languages, and we perform on a variety of different academic ability levels. We all come to school each day with different gifts and talents, interests and issues, hopes and dreams.
Despite all the ways we are different, we are alike in so many ways.
We are all leaders in our school. We are all excited about learning. We LOVE to share what we know. We are curious, ask questions, and celebrate when we are successful at learning new things. Most importantly, we work hard by using everyone's unique talents to support all of our varying needs in order to succeed. We know our teamwork is what will make our dreams work!
My Project
STEAM is a passion of mine because I truly feel it is important to the future success of all my students. STEAM (integrated science, technology, engineering, art, and math) activities enable them to address assignments in fun, collaborative ways and encourage them to think "outside the box" for a variety of solutions. They have more engaging and challenging opportunities to master our Virginia Math and Science Standards of Learning. We frequently do projects with donated and recycled materials like plastic bottles, yarn, and shoe boxes, but I would like to provide my class with some permanent, reusable materials.
When doing STEAM, my students often build on experiences to be successful with the academic objectives, but I also believe they come to learn problem solving, resilience, and self-esteem through their projects.
I want them to be able to see failure as an important part of this problem solving process, and to understand that real learning comes from trial and error, from taking calculated risks, and from persistence. I believe tools like the wooden planks, dominoes, and magnetic tiles will teach my students valuable lessons that will go beyond state standards and will better prepare them for success in the future.
