My Students

"If you build it, they will learn." Everyday in my classroom is always a learning event. I believe hands on learning is key for students. Activities and projects are relevant and real world related. When students come to my class, they know they are going to be active learners.

I teach 72 inquisitive learners with eager personalities.

I teach the gifted and talented students in grades three through six in a rural community in upstate South Carolina. My students are out of the box thinkers that are very ambitious and excited about learning. They are sponges that seem to always soak up whatever we are doing and take it to the next level. They enjoy problem solving, learning, and adapting from trial and error. They learn best by doing and through the collaboration of their peers. We are a Title One school, which means the majority of our school population receives free or reduced lunch. We have about 430 students in our small country school in grades 4k-6. We are a close community that really rallies around the school and students. We work to stay on the cutting edge of education by offering our kids the highest quality education we possibly can.

My Project

My students will use the K'Nex for several different projects. We are currently moving to add more Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) into our curriculum. For instance my sixth graders work on a structures and bridge unit. I will use these resources in projects with them. They will learn about several structures including different types of bridges and how they work. They will compare and contrast theses different structures, citing the advantages and disadvantages of each. The students will also learn the jobs related to building these structures. The cumulative project at the end of the unit will be for groups to try and build the STRONGEST bridge. Students will have a budget and specific jobs. Once their bridge is constructed, they will test their bridge using weights to see which group can take all the information we learned to build the strongest bridge. This is a great hands on activity for the students to APPLY what they have learned.

This will truly be a memorable project for my students.

By actually creating and designing a bridge of their own, the students will learn not only learn the content of the unit, but also they will have the opportunity to work on cooperation, listening, and real life problem solving skills. These are all fundamental skills that will apply to real life situations beyond the classroom for years to come. "If you build it, they will learn."
