Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students I teach are an amazing and diverse group of learners. Although they have specific learning and behavioral needs, they are eager to learn at their grade level and enjoy reading stories that relate to real life experiences or can be related to their own lives.

My students come from low income families, most without male role models, and they depend on strong male friendships for guidance.

My students also live in an area that is gentrifying, and they are starting to feel the place they call home is not so much home.

My Project

The students I work with live in a low income area that has been riddled with violence on top of COVID-19. My hope is that this book will give them an outlet and teach them the importance of working in the community, the benefit of team sports, coaching mentoring and relationships that come from working together rather than apart!

We read together as a group to build one another up!

My students need books that they can relate, characters that they can identify with in order to better comprehend. Reading together gives the students different ideas and views of how the story unfolds. It also allows readers at a lower level to learn from their peers and readers at a higher level to teach those same peers! There is nothing more rewarding as a teacher to watch students engage in meaningful conversations with each other when they have books in which they can relate!

The learning outcomes I would like my students to achieve is that thru hard work and determination, even in the face of adversity, life can be beautiful!
