Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"If speaking is silver, then listening is gold." This Turkish proverb demonstrates the value of listening skills. Adding a listening center to the library will greatly enhance the comprehension and reading skills that appeal to multiple learning styles in an engaging and meaningful way.
My students live in an urban, low-income, Mexican-American community in Illinois.
It is a neighborhood elementary school serving grades K-7. There is a real sense of community that reaches past their physical neighborhood and into the classrooms of the school. The dedication of the staff, students and families is apparent to any observer. The average student is highly motivated to learn academically as well as socially. Creating good readers is an inherent ingredient in achieving this success. Many of the students are English Language Learners (ELL). Adding a listening center to the early elementary library will help enrich their word recognition and comprehension skills.
My Project
Young children learn best through active, engaged, and meaningful learning. Adding a listening center and developmentally appropriate activity packs addresses all these concerns. The activity packs focus on comprehension skills including main idea, sequencing, making inferences, comparing, fact/opinion and vocabulary development.
These self-guided activities will appeal to all types of learning styles, including visual, auditory and kinesthetic. Students learn 'by doing' with these hands on exercises. Many young children have short attention spans and implementing center time allows students to engage in an activity and then move on to the next center. Students gain a sense of self-discovery as they complete the tasks on their own. Students benefit from a consistent routine such as center time. Centers also allows for individualized attention by freeing up the teacher to work in small group instruction.
The early elementary students at my school visit the library twice a week.
The donation of a listening center and complementary listening activities will give me the chance to dedicate one of those library periods to center time. Working in collaboration with the classroom teacher, we will be able to reach across the curriculum and enrich basic comprehension and reading skills through engaging, hands-on activities. This will also allow for more individualized instruction time with the teacher.
