My students represent a diverse community of learners, both in terms of special needs population and the enormous range of socio-economic backgrounds. Many of my students are first generation Americans who struggle with language but excel in art, the visual language. Many of my students come from home situations that are not ideal, but they want to learn and want to shine despite their pasts. Art is often a place they feel safe to express themselves and are able to excel despite their limitations.
My Project
Technology is everywhere, except in the hands of children who need it most. This generation is bombarded with images and technology every day of their lives, and yet, the technology that makes the most sense for the art room is unavailable to us because of the cost. I envision a classroom where children are able to explore the world of art at their fingertips, visiting online museums and creating digital work that sparks creativity. Three iPads would be a start to broadening my students art experience to include modern day art making and make the history of art more accessible.
