This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember how cool it was when your favorite teacher could answer all your questions, no matter how obscure they might have been? And how fascinating answers led to more questions & more exciting facts?

My kindergarten students possess insatiable curiosities that amaze and delight me.

What did dinosaurs sound like & did they have any hobbies? How many could fit in a classroom? What do little boys & girls in other countries wear to school? Our school serves a low-income community where 98% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch & walking to school can be a scary ordeal given the inner-city setting. Unfortunately, as our families struggle to provide the basics, many send their little ones to school with growling tummies. Not only are the families unable to donate funds for school supplies, but they are often unable to support their children academically. Our students deserve access to a quality, equitable education, but lack of funds means they do not have access to basic technology that businesses and affluent schools consider necessary. Remember the overhead projector? That's our current technology.

My Project

We recently won a grant for classroom LCD projectors & document cameras. What's missing is a laptop to hook up to the projector. It's like having speakers but no stereo. The only computer in my classroom is my clunky, old desktop that can't be hooked up to the projector. A laptop would allow me to prepare engaging visual presentations that draw from the wealth of knowledge & visuals available online. My students would be able to see & hear what an ocean wave looks & sounds like, as well as access educational websites & resources in their native language. As all are English Language Learners, this would be a good bridge as they learn English. One of my students is visually impaired. She sits at my knee, but still can't see what I write on the chart paper. A laptop would allow her to access specially prepared audio & large font lessons at a workstation.

We’re all working so hard to interest the kids in school & to decrease the high school drop out rates in California.
