My Students

Everyone loves to explore! My students need active engagement to learn. With the GEMS Terrarium and Aquatic Habitats plant and animal replenishment for our GEMS kits they will explore through biological, hands-on investigations!

I am an educator in a rural area Kentucky school, with a high concentration of poverty.

We are located near a military installation and have many military families in our school community. I teach classes that include both special needs and general education students. My students may lack the means to get the exploration tools they need, but they do not lack in their curiosity and desire to work hard.

My Project

I have requested the plant and animal life replenishment packs for the GEMS Terrarium and Aquatic Habitats kits. Using the hands-on explorations in the GEMS curriculum, students will investigate both land-based and aquatic life cycles as well as cause and effect implications of changes to the environment. As the students learn, they become aware of the interconnectedness of the natural world and of environmental problems. This project can be extended to take what is learned and apply it to local water and soil quality issues. These explorations can be basic preparations for future labs in Honors or AP classes.

Your help will make it possible for these students to explore ideas and challenges that are simply not available to them in the regular classroom curriculum.

Along with the curricular and thought-provoking benefits of the project, you will also be giving these students a perspective on environmental problems they will never encounter in their standard school education.
