FULLY FUNDED! Ms. L.'s classroom raised $264
This project is fully funded
What is more fun for first graders than pretending to be something else? My school district has adopted a new science curriculum for this upcoming year and I have moved to a new school that is opening under tight budget restrictions. This school will open with what the district considers necessary for a classroom and no extras. Therefore, I would like to add to my classroom community some animals that will help me teach by integrating literacy, math and science.
I would like to have in my classroom an aquarium, an ant farm, an earthworm habitat, a cricket habitat and a frog habitat to go with my hermit crabs. I anticipate using the different habitats to teach the children about how animals meet their needs, how plants and animals help each other, and how important it is for the children to be aware of the effects on the environment when they litter or destroy nature. As the children observe the animals in their habitats, they will be recording their observations in journals, strengthening not only their writing skills but also their science observation skills. As the animals grow, math measurement skills will be used. By having the students use real animals for these activities, science will be brought to real life for them and hopefully it will make them more aware of what the world offers them.
My students will spend time each week observing the different animals, recording their observations, feeding, writing stories to and about the animals, comparing them to each other and other animals observed or studied in class. It will be a hands-on learning experience for the children to observe up close the fish, frogs, ants, worms and crickets that they only get to glimpse as they swim, hop, walk or crawl through the children's lives away from school. For these reasons of giving my students real life exposure to some of the animals and insects of our world, I would like to have donated an aquarium, ant farm, frog habitat, cricket habitat and a worm farm purchased from Delta Education .
