This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have an incoming class of 32 students in a high-needs, autism based school. Because of the size and demographics of our community we have a larger student population living in poverty than most Title 1 schools have in their enrollment. Sadly, however, because we have students on the other end of the economic scale we don't qualify for additional funding or assistance. Our students suffer in the long run.
Let's face it, sitting still is HARD for kids. Heck, it's hard for me. I'm the teacher that always gets in trouble in meetings if I have to sit for more than ten minutes, so I am very conscientious about using lots of movement in my classroom. There are times, however, when kids simply need to stay in one spot. That's where an exercise ball for a chair enters the classroom.
I started noticing that my own son was choosing to sit on his exercise ball to watch movies and do homework on a regular basis when I began researching the balance/concentration/brain connection. It appears that teachers who have used these exercise balls as a seating choice in their classroom have had great success.
Please help me to accommodate my wiggly, squirmy, wild 4th grade learners. With your assistance our classroom will continue to be a place where all learners are comfortable.
