My Students

How to begin a story? My little students struggle with creative writing every day.

Writing is hard work, especially when you have a learning disability or a health impairment.

My students come from their general education classrooms to work on necessary skills every day. Now that they can spell basic words, compose sentences and paragraphs, we want to challenge them to create their own stories. Many of them are visual learners, and most don't find organizing their thinking easy. Our urban school serves a wide variety of families; some of my students live in huge, fancy homes; others have known homelessness.

My Project

These Lego kits will stimulate the organization of ideas in both maths and writing, very challenging activities for even typical learners! My students love story cubes, but these Lego sets will encourage consistency and pre-planning. Verbal skills will improve as they tell their story before writing; social skills will be stretched as they take turns, respond to each other's work, and share materials. The maths Legos will have a similar impact, and allow children to visualize story problems, eventually creating their own.

Hands-on materials are so very important, especially with the new Common Core curriculum.

My students must activate many parts of their brains to learn; Legos will make that not only easier, but much more fun!
