iEarth: Learning about Saving Earth with Renewable Energy
My students need one K'NEX Renewable Energy Kit.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Jones's classroom raised $280
This project is fully funded
Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children."~Native American Proverb. My students are working daily to build a better future for themselves. In iEarth club, students learn to build a better future for their children by caring for the planet.
We are a public school made up of mostly students who receive free lunch.
About half of our students are also English Language Learners. We are under a Race to the Top grant and are all working hard to meet our goals. Even though my students face many challenges, they are optimistic that with work and determination, and a little bit of fun, they can overcome them and achieve great things!
We have iClubs afterschool for students in grades 3-5 who complete an application process. These clubs offer enrichment opportunities that students might not otherwise have. In iEarth, we have been learning (and educating the rest of the school) about the 3 R's: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. We started a school-wide recycling program last year. In addition to continuing the program, this year I want to add a fourth R: Renewable. Since we are also a STEM school, the K'NEX kit will be a perfect way to teach students about renewable energy and incorporate STEM.
My Project
We will use the KNEX kit to build models to give students a fun, hands-on introduction to renewable energy. This will supplement the work we did last year with iEarth - learning to reduce, reuse, and recycle. We don't get a lot of time for science during the school day, so these hands-on kits will combine science and technology with sustainability education, making iEarth one of the most fun and educational clubs around!
This K'NEX kit will benefit our students by providing them with future oriented thinking in a hands-on, real world approach.
Thinking about the future of the planet may just also translate into thinking about their own futures, which will give a double return on your investment in our children's future prospects!
