Identifying Animal Tracks by Using Carnivore Scent Stations
My students need animal track guides, animal track replicas, animal track molds, and a sieve set to learn how to identify animal tracks outdoors.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Bakker's classroom raised $285
This project is fully funded
My Students
Inner city students are rarely exposed to the outdoors and have limited opportunities to view and interact with wild animals. An animal track identification kit would help teach students about the wildlife that does exist in the city.
Inner city students are rarely exposed to the outdoors and have limited opportunities to view and interact with wild animals.
When polled in my classroom typically only 1 in 32 students have ever had the opportunity to walk through the woods. Many more have limited access to green spaces in their communities.
My Project
By teaching students about animals in the wild they can learn to understand and appreciate nature and the environment. I had an AMAZING experience during college to study out in the woods for 3 weeks during a summer course. During the course we built Carnivore Scent Stations and tracked the prints of animals that visited the stations. By doing so we were able to see what kinds of animals lived in the region and identified them by their tracks. A Carnivore Scent Station is an area with loose dirt on top and animal scent in a hole beneath to attract wildlife. I want to offer this same opportunity to my science students. This way even inner city students can learn about wild animals in their own environment. To do so, my class needs an animal track identification kit to help teach students about the wildlife that does exist in the city. Students could create molds of the existing prints from the kit and take wildlife prints from the Carnivore Scent Station we build outside.
As an educator with a masters in Environmental Education I am trying to get more students immersed in nature.
By doing so I hope to build environmental ethics, develop a respect for our environment, and teach students about the local ecology so they can better understand and protect it. By helping to fund my project you can help urban students learn more about wildlife and our natural systems.
