This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are a diverse group of boys and girls with amazing personalities that blow us away every day. Our students live in the heart of a bustling urban center. They are primarily African-American and Latino. We are a special needs public school. We have students from all over our city who attend some of our special programs.
All of our students have special needs.
Many of them have multiple disabilities. Many of them are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. They are learning to communicate in their own ways as they learn not only life skills but academics as well.
My Project
We work in a special needs school with primarily Children on the Autism Spectrum. Almost every single one of our 150 students receive Speech Therapy Services. The ipad is a very powerful tool in the world of Speech.
iPads can help our students on the Autism Spectrum communicate using Alternative Augmentative Communication apps.
They also help with other functional skills a student may need, i.e. emotion journals, tables, learning apps; Scheduling and routine apps; Social skill apps.
We have seven Speech Teachers/SLP-CCC's in our school. We can no longer keep up with the newest in Speech app development with our first or second gen ipads. We need new ones to be able to more effectively help our students communicate and develop functional skills.
