My Students
"Any sufficiently advanced technology is equivalent to magic." (Sir Arthur C. Clarke)
I want to offer my students the 'magic' of learning through technology in the classroom!
I have been teaching for 25 years.
I began my career teaching kindergarten, but I have also taught 4th and 5th grades. My current position is in the Early Start prekindergarten program, which I have taught for 15 years. The students in my pre-K classes are three, four and five year olds that have been screened and found "at risk" for development in either cognitive, language or motor areas.
I thoroughly enjoy teaching students in these critical years because they are like sponges ~ soaking up anything I offer them! Therefore, I try to offer all of my students as many hands-on learning experiences as I can so they are able to actually observe and experience the many concepts they need for background knowledge of their world. I was awarded the Horace Mann Educator of the Year last May for my excellence in teaching.
My Project
Many of my students do not have access to technology. Providing me with professional development to apply meaningful experiences in the classroom would give my students the opportunity to learn skills with the newest technology and applications. These skills will increase their chances of being successful students in kindergarten.
By providing me the opportunity to be trained on the use of iBook Author and iMovie, I would immediately apply my knowledge to create iBooks with the farm unit I offer in the spring. I allow my students to observe the hatching of chicks in incubators in my classroom every year. With the knowledge I can gain through professional development in technology, I will be equipped to create iBooks and iMovies for my students in the classroom to learn about a farm/animals, but also publish the books for them to take home and share with their families! Any extension activity, particularly ones to be shared in the home, make learning even that much more momentous.
By having these exciting applications to learn with, my students will be given the opportunity to learn new words and have a better understanding of their world.
Developing vocabulary skills is a key component to school success! Research shows that if a child has a poor vocabulary, simply knowing the names of common items in their surrounding, they will be a poor reader. I want to lay the foundation for my students to become proficient readers by reinforcing concepts through technology!
