This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a Special Education teacher in the Bronx, my classes are filled with different kinds of kids and learners. There is an array of cultures, languages, and experiences that create the beautiful tapestry of our student body. My students come to school ready to learn despite some limitations of their realities outside the classroom— whether that be socio-economic, family, language barriers— they show up inquisitive, creative, and motivated. Our students and our school don't have a ton of money, the students bring the value to teaching. I would go to the ends of the earth for my students, and they know that. I want to give them access and opportunities they might not otherwise have.
My Project
While teaching remotely, I have been trying to find the best ways to reach my students who are struggling with motivation and engagement. Because I am a Special Education teacher, I am in four different subjects, which makes it important to compartmentalize in order to best perform for my kids. Using an IPad would open up a world of apps and organizational tools that I simply do not have access to currently. My DOE laptop is extremely old and not compatible with a lot of the programs necessary to teach remotely OR even in person (my attendance app is on my phone). While I make it my business to be very involved in my students' lives, I know this would make me better able to engage them academically. Further, I would be able to write more personalized feedback with the Apple pencil, which would more closely mirror the experience of getting revisions from their teacher.
