iCan Be Creative in Kindergarten with iPads

My Students

In a large Kindergarten classroom it is very difficult not having enough resources. Not having enough iPads for a small group of children makes it a constant battle. By having this extra iPad mini my students will be able to express their thinking in creative ways and learn at their own pace.

Teaching at a school with high poverty and a large free and reduced lunch rate means we lack many of the materials we need to be successful.

We need a way to make these students WANT to come to school and WANT to learn. If they are engaged in their learning they will never want to miss a single day. I need to be able to provide these tools and the technology they need to creatively show their knowledge in my classroom and in life. There is technology everywhere now and many of my students have not had any exposure until they enter my classroom. At my school there are now some online assessments and in order for them to succeed they need to know how to use the technology so it will not hold them back.

My Project

I would like to work with my students individually to give them more choices in their learning. If they want to express their learning through a video, an interview, a drawing using the iPad mini I will encourage that. At the beginning of the year this iPad will give my students the opportunity to respond to questions about a book, answer math facts, and even create stories through auditory responses and pictures. Since they are still learning about words and letter sounds at the beginning of the year this will give them a way to be successful and, in return, build their self esteem. By adding an additional iPad I will be able to have four students work in a group on their own unique project. This allows an opportunity for my students to help and teach each other as well as respond in a way that makes sense to them. There is no reason the arts and music cannot be a part of learning. Instead of simply reading for fluency, perform a known readers theater and record it!

Kindergarten is a crucial year that sets the tone for all the years to come. With this iPad I will have the opportunity to provide choice; to expose them to their creative side and build their confidence as a reader, a writer, and in their ability to work as a team. Thank you considering my project, and a big thanks for making a difference in my classroom and in the lives of many children year after year!
