This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the wonderful privilege of teaching P.E. at a diverse charter school in Las Vegas. Teaching at my school has provided me with opportunities to do more than just teach P.E. during the school day. Each day, I tutor a group of Kindergarten students after school. Some of my students know their ABCs while some of them are still learning. Some of my students struggle with English because it is not their first language while others seem to speak with near-perfect diction. All of my students do have one thing in common: they want to learn so they can be better.
I teach at a Title I School in Nevada in which a high percentage of my students come from bilingual homes and all students receive free or reduced price lunch.
My students face tough obstacles in their lives but arrive to school smiling and ready to learn. They love their teachers and they adore their principal. Our school truly is a community – a family. We each do our part, as student and teacher work side by side with one mission in mind: our students’ success. Our Kindergarten students even know the year of their college graduation!
My Project
My school offers a free after-school tutoring program to all of our students. I have the privilege to tutor a group of Kindergartners. Many of my students are English language learners; students whose first language is not English. A significant part of our tutoring program involves online literacy programs designed to improve and enhance the user's English capabilities. We also utilize a series of Math programs to ensure these students reach their appropriate grade level. My students love these programs and using tablets as our way to access them makes learning fun for them. However, there are days when we have more students than tablets and we have students that are left without a way to access these crucial programs.
My students need additional iPads so they can always have access to online programs that continue their pursuit of reaching their academic goals.
These iPads would help guarantee that all students in my after-school group could have access to our online learning programs during "tablet time." No student should have to wonder 'am I going to get one?' when it relates to a chance at pursuing academic goals. Even if it's just these two iPads, it will make an immediate difference in my after-school tutoring group and my summer school group. Many of my students don't have internet access at home to complete these tasks, so having this opportunity at school is essential. This is a project that will make a lasting difference for students in need for years to come.
