IB Students Need Video Equipment For Sharing Experimental Results
My students need a video camera for filming experiments and creating presentations to share their results with other students. As a class, we are also curating student made videos of content for review purposes.
My students are a diverse group of bright young scholars from all over the NYC area, most of whom are first- and second-generation Americans, attending a competitive Title I school in Brooklyn, NY. Our school uses the International Baccalaureate's diploma program as a way to develop students' abilities across disciplines at a very high level and foster well-rounded individuals. We are an "IB For All" school which means that we fully cover the cost of the IB program - usually only available to private school students or a select group in public schools - so that all our students can achieve college readiness. My students often balance rigorous academics with a lot of responsibilities at home supporting their families all while maintaining a positive attitude and desire to learn.
My Project
Working scientists are not only tasked with performing experiments and analyzing their data but also sharing results and presenting these results to peers. As part of the International Baccalaureate curriculum, students are required to perform a number of lab experiments. Often, they simply write up reports and move on. I would like to have students work on their communication skills by presenting their results to peers and other teachers. Video can be a powerful tool for allowing students to watch their presentations and self reflect while also saving these videos for review. These videos can then be posted on our class website to serve as a resource. In addition, in the IB curriculum there is an incredible amount of material to cover. If you search online, many other teachers have made videos to help students review the content. I would prefer to have my classroom be more student led and curate a library of videos that are student created to help drive their own learning and understanding. I would use this camera to have students both videotape their labs, their presentations, and review sessions to help put the learning in the hands of the students. Any help is appreciated!
