My students are a diverse group of bright young scholars from all over the NYC area, most of whom are first- and second-generation Americans, attending a competitive Title I school in Brooklyn, NY. Our school uses the International Baccalaureate's diploma program as a way to develop students' abilities across disciplines at a very high level and foster well-rounded individuals. We are an "IB For All" school which means that we fully cover the cost of the IB program - usually only available to private school students or a select group in public schools - so that all our students can achieve college readiness. My students often balance rigorous academics with a lot of responsibilities at home supporting their families all while maintaining a positive attitude and desire to learn.
My Project
Our International Baccalaureate students are required to perform advance laboratory techniques but oftentimes this equipment is prohibitively expensive. Our school has never been able to obtain a UV-Vis spectrophotometer but this piece of equipment can be used across all our IB science to deepen both the content knowledge and laboratory expertise of our students.
In IB Biology, students would be able to actually find the absorption spectra for various plants to see what wavelengths of light are being absorbed for photosynthesis rather than simply seeing it in a textbook.
In IB Chemistry, students can measure the rates of chemical reactions by seeing the change in absorbance for different chemicals or examine the effects different ligands have on complex ions. In Physics, when students are studying light and optics, they can actually test absorbance.
This equipment is extremely expensive but would be cared for and used for years to come in our lab. Help make science real for our students and not just graphs in a textbook. Thank you!
