My students need books to help them understand and explore nature, along with Picture Perfect Science lessons, I can help them virtually explore nature through reading and hands-on investigations.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Saletan's classroom raised $325

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a science teacher in a Title 1 school in the Bronx. 98% of my students live below the poverty level and they receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of the students are immigrants and come from varied backgrounds and countries such as the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico, Senegal, Gambia, and Ghana. Many of our students are ENL (English as a New Language) learners. The language of science is important for all students to understand and have a working knowledge of in order to succeed.
A common language for all of them is through science.
Resources are very limited. It is very hard to get students to bring in $5 for a class trip, let alone anything else they need for extra supplies for science. They really benefit from hands-on class work, hands-on experiments, journals, and interactive games are the best way for my students to understand the concepts, and reach the New York State Standards.
My Project
Mentor texts are a way to introduce students to an area of study in science. "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind," gives students a real world context of a young boy who built a windmill for his village. Mentor texts pique a student's interest. They help guide students through their various types of science explorations.
These books will open the door for science exploration.
Students need to have a foundation and understanding of a topic before they begin their investigations. These books will help them reach that goal.
Through reading these books and stories students are challenged to explore and design their own experiments. The other mentor texts on my list will give students an understanding of other NYC standard based science topics.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
