My Students

Our middle school is a Title 1 school with over 80% of its students having free or reduced lunch. I am the AVID elective teacher at NMS. AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID students tend to be from socioeconomically disadvantaged families and will be the first in their families to attend college. AVID aims at bringing the student who is in the academic middle, placing them in rigorous, college-preparatory classes, and teaching them the skills they will need to be successful in college and in their future careers.

My Project

On Thursday, after 19 days of missed school, my students FINALLY returned back to campus. Our district and its surrounding area took on an onslaught of flood waters leaving many of our students with next to nothing. Knowing that I needed to approach the topic of the Hurricane Harvey with care, I decided to do a quick write that has become very popular with the education community at the end of class. The students were asked to write about what they wished their teacher knew. While a lot of the students did let me know that they were okay, there were quite a few cases where the students are in need of hygiene products, school supplies, socks, and shoes. For this particular project, I want to create 48 hygiene/school supplies bags to give out students who are in need. I already have the school supplies to place in the bags... I just need a little help with the hygiene products. Also, I had two sweet students who are desperately in need of shoes.
