Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school. Many students get free or reduced-price lunch. The majority of students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and may only get the two meals a day they receive at the high school. Many of my students are also English language learners or already speak two languages. My students are filled with personality and many have experienced hardship no sixteen-year-old should have experienced.
My students bring enthusiasm, a positive attitude, and imagination to class on a regular basis.
Our campus has a strong sense of community; we really are a family. We even have a supper program where students can eat dinner after school for free.
My Project
My school is currently distance learning. In my environmental class each quarter I send the students a bag of gardening materials where we garden together, but at home. Each student currently has soil, seeds, plant containers, pipettes, syringes, a plant light, and a watering tray. I am teaching them gardening skills at home and it has been so much fun. At first I was just teaching students the basic skills, but now my students have turned into young horticulturists. This budding relationship of teacher and student is really blossoming into something of it's own. We also have the help of our school district's garden outdoor educator going over demos, soil health, and tips.
Some of my students have such a green thumb.
I was elated when last week one of my students brought back 4 large rhubarb plants she had been growing at home that she wanted to give to our zen garden. One of my students is growing corn at home that is up to his shoulder. At the end of quarter 2 I had 5 students bring back their corn for our garden and the stalks are thriving.
Right now students are germinating and growing their plants indoors with a plant light. To take this mentorship to the next level I would like to give students that are really excelling their own mini portable greenhouse they can leave outside in the spring when temperatures are warmer. To continue to foster the love for gardening and learning more about plants we also need watering cans, trowels, and seeds. The stickers are incentives for the students when they design their own gardening projects. I can't wait to see what they come up with.
More than half of students from low‑income households
